This research project assessed the market potential for efficient dipper well technologies in the ComEd service territory.

Overview

The project team explored the market potential of efficient dipper well technologies at foodservice facilities in the ComEd service territory. Previous field studies have shown the conservation capabilities of these technologies and their suitability for the foodservice market in other states, but their potential in this market is not yet understood. The project team conducted market actor interviews with end users, distributors and health departments, as well as surveys to determine the market potential and characterize the supply chain of three different efficient dipper well technologies. They also completed an econometric analysis of the identified technologies to determine which technologies are best suited to the ComEd market.

Results and Outcomes

Through their econometric analysis, the project team estimated a technical savings potential of 40 GWh per year in the ComEd service territory. Of the three dipper well technologies reviewed in this study, two of the models have not received FDA approval and are therefore not candidates for immediate usage in Illinois. The project team determined that in order for a large-scale dipper well offering to be successful, it will be important to work closely with the local health departments to showcase the efficacy of the replacement technologies and develop a workaround for the existing food code. The market analysis also indicated that knowledge of dipper well technologies and replacements is limited among customers, so it will be necessary to include training and education as part of an offering.
